Mara closed the ledger and listened. The mill had gone quiet an hour ago, but the floorboards above her still creaked, and creaked, and creaked again, as if someone were pacing out the length of the room.

What can AI do for writers?

AI for writers means using a language model as a writing partner: it brainstorms ideas, outlines plots, drafts scenes in a voice you describe, checks continuity across chapters and gives line-level feedback. You stay the author; the model suggests and you choose. On NanoGPT you can use a different model for each of those jobs.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Paste your scene or outline

Start with what you have: a chapter, a premise or a list of plot points.

  2. Step 2

    Ask two models for notes

Send the same request to several models side by side and compare their ideas.

  3. Step 3

    Keep what works

Take the lines you like and write the rest yourself. Your drafts stay on your device.

Work with the whole manuscript

Long-context models can read a full chapter, or a whole book, in one message. Paste it in and ask for a continuity check: names, timelines, who knows what when, and threads you dropped.

Dark themes without the refusals

Crime, horror, war and morally gray characters trip the filters of mainstream models. Switch to an uncensored model for those scenes and back again for the rest, in the same chat.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI is best for fiction?

Right now Claude Opus 5.5 is the highest-ranked model on NanoGPT in its creative writing ranking, a blend of LMArena Creative Writing and EQ-Bench’s creative and long-form writing tests. Taste matters, so send the same scene to two or three models and keep the voice you like. See the writing ranking.

Will AI write my book for me?

It can draft, but the books that work still come from a writer making the choices. Most authors use AI to brainstorm, outline, unblock a scene, check continuity and polish lines, and write the parts that matter themselves.

Who owns the text I write with it?

You do. NanoGPT’s terms say you keep ownership of what you put in and own what the model writes for you, subject to the law where you live. Read the terms.

Are my drafts private?

Your chats, and the drafts in them, are stored on your device, and NanoGPT doesn’t log your prompts or replies. The model provider sees what you send to answer it; turn on Zero Data Retention routing in Settings to use only providers that say they keep no copy. What is stored where.

Can I use it for mature fiction?

Yes. Adults can use uncensored models for crime, horror, violence and mature themes that mainstream models refuse. Illegal content is never allowed. Uncensored models.

How much does a novel draft cost?

A 90,000-word draft written chapter by chapter is roughly 120,000 tokens written and 600,000 tokens of context sent. At today’s prices that’s about $4.80 on Claude Opus 5.5 or $0.49 on GLM 5.3, with no subscription. Pro ($12 a month) covers open models within its weekly allowance.
