Private AI chat that doesn’t keep your conversations
Your chat history lives on your device by default, not on our servers. No email, no account form, and a clear answer to what is stored where.

What is private AI chat?
Private AI chat means using an AI chatbot without handing over your identity or a copy of every conversation. A private AI chatbot keeps your history on your device, doesn’t log what you type, and lets you pick model providers that keep no copy. On NanoGPT you need no email, chats stay in your browser by default, and zero-data-retention routing is one switch in Settings.
How to chat privately
- Step 1
Turn on ZDR routing
In Settings, turn on Zero Data Retention routing so only providers that say they keep no copy are used.
- Step 2
Pick a ZDR model
Choose a model tagged ZDR, from the list below or the ZDR filter on the models page.
- Step 3
Manage your history
Your chats stay in your browser. Export, import or delete them whenever you like.
What we store and what we don’t
Most privacy pages overclaim. Here is exactly where your data goes.
| Where | What |
|---|---|
| On your device | Your chat history and settings, in your browser. You can export, import or delete them. |
| On NanoGPT | No logs of your prompts or replies, and no email or personal details. Billing keeps usage records: model, tokens and cost. Sync is off unless you turn it on. |
| At the model provider | Your prompt, to generate the reply. With Zero Data Retention routing on, only providers that say they keep no copy are used. |
Where your message goes
Your device
You type the message. The chat history is saved here, in your browser.
NanoGPT
Passes the message to the model you picked and bills the tokens. It doesn’t log the text.
Model provider
Runs the model and sends the reply back. With ZDR routing on, only providers that say they keep no copy are used.
Private by design
No email to sign up
No email or personal details to sign up, top up or use any feature.
No prompt logs
NanoGPT doesn’t log your prompts or replies.
History on your device
Chats are saved in your browser. Sync is optional and can be end-to-end encrypted.
Crypto payments
Top up from $0.10 in crypto, including privacy coins.
Choose zero data retention
Zero data retention (ZDR) means the model provider says it doesn’t keep your prompt either. These are the strongest models with a ZDR route, ranked by NanoGPT’s combined benchmark blend. Turn on Zero Data Retention routing in Settings and NanoGPT sends your messages only to providers that say they keep no copy, or refuses to send them.

#3 on NanoGPT for hard reasoning.

- $2.00 / $10.00
Ranked by NanoGPT’s combined benchmark blend, with at most two models per maker. Prices are input / output per 1M tokens with ZDR routing on, as billed today.
ZDR is best effort: NanoGPT can’t audit providers’ servers, so it relies on their stated policies, and some providers screen requests for illegal content and may keep flagged material where the law requires it. For more, TEE models run inside hardware-secured enclaves, and Private Mode encrypts your message in the browser for the enclave. See the privacy guide, how ZDR routing works and the text models page, which has a ZDR filter.
Your history, in your hands
Because your chats live in your browser, you control them: take them with you, move them to another browser, or wipe them.
Export
Download your conversations as a file whenever you like.
Import
Load that file into another browser or device to carry on there.
Delete everything
Remove your chat history from the browser completely.

Who it’s for
Writers
AI for writers →Drafts in your chats are saved on your device by default, not in a cloud account. To answer, a message passes through NanoGPT to the model’s provider.
Health and legal questions
Ask the awkward questions without a profile building up somewhere.
Roleplayers
AI roleplay →Your stories are yours, on your device.
Anyone who opts out of training
No account history to feed a model, and ZDR routing uses only providers that say they keep no copy.

Frequently asked questions
Does NanoGPT store my chats?
Not by default. Your chat history is stored in your browser on your device. NanoGPT doesn’t log your prompts or replies; it keeps only the usage records billing needs, such as the model, token counts and cost. If you turn on sync, you choose how it’s encrypted: with a passphrase or passkey, chats are encrypted in your browser before upload; in Convenience mode NanoGPT can decrypt them so you can recover your account. Read the privacy page.
Do model providers see my prompts?
Yes, the provider that runs the model receives your prompt so it can answer. Some keep prompts for a while for abuse checks. Models tagged ZDR have providers that say they keep no copy, and turning on Zero Data Retention routing in Settings makes NanoGPT use only those providers, or refuse to send. Even on those routes, some providers screen for illegal content and may keep flagged material where the law requires it.
Are my chats used for training?
NanoGPT doesn’t train on your chats. With Zero Data Retention routing on, your messages go only to providers that say they don’t keep them.
Can I pay anonymously?
Yes. You don’t need an email or any personal details, and you can top up with crypto, including privacy coins, from $0.10.
What happens if I clear my browser?
Your chat history is deleted with it, because that’s where it lives. Export your chats first, or turn on encrypted sync, if you want to keep them.
How does this compare with running AI locally?
Running a model on your own computer, with Ollama for example, keeps everything on your machine, but you need strong hardware and you’re limited to open models that fit on it. NanoGPT gives you the frontier models as well, with your history kept on your device and a choice of zero-data-retention providers.
Private by default, not as an add-on
Open the chat. Nothing to sign up for, and your history stays with you.
